The city is quite safe for tourists...though as with any other populated city, care must be taken to avoid unknown or secluded places after dark. As far as I know, it also one of the greenest city in the world, and has an excellent climate most of the time.

Go ahhhhhhhhhhhhhheaddddddddd...enjoy !!

Light comfortable clothing
At least one warm jacket or sweater for it might be chilly on evening safaris
If you are traveling on the Blue Train, Rovos Rail or staying in one of the top 5 star hotels a dinner -jacket will be required.
-Hat or Cap
-Binoculars

-Allergy Merdication
-Comfortable walking shoes
-Sunscreen with a SPF of 30 or higher
-A small flashlight
-Some US dollar cash if you are travelling into Zambia, Zimbabwe or Botswana
-Photographic equipment and enough film/memory
-Converters/Adapters for South African 220V power supply
-Insect repellant ( Aerosol seems to be the easiest to apply)
-Sunglasses

hey Winnie, thanks a ton for the list of most useful articles to carry. Infact, you gave me and idea atht I should make a list every time I'm about to go on a vacation, so that I don't miss anything or simply be in want in the middle of the night.

Actually, the last time I went out for a few days, I actually left my digicam at home, and the entire vacation, I kept cursing myself and my habit.

Thanks a ton again!!
