Whenever I travel I try to stay in homestays to get off the beaten path. This one is by far one of the best. It was he most rewarding day of our entire trip to Cambodia. The delightful and informative owner Kheang takes you on tours of the village and farmlands (where she grew up before working for an NGO in Phnom Penh for 10 years), inbetween making delicious homecooked Cambodia meals (best Amok anywhere!). In the evening people from the village come to talk to you about whatever you want. 80% of Cambodia’s population are still subsistence farmers, and this place is unique in giving an insider insight into the realities of peasant life. We found it particularly insightful to have this perspective on the Pol Pot years – especially as most information on these comes from previously wealthy city dwellers dispossessed by the Khmer Rouge or the horrors of Toul Sleng and the killing fields. Be warned, this is not a luxury establishment. You’ll sleep in a (very clean) Khmer wooden stilt hut, wash in the family’s bathroom, and have to do without electricity – the government have only put it in on the other side of the road! That said, strongly recommend you take the short detour required off the road from Phnom Penh - Siem Reap to take this in. For full info go to rana-cambodia.blogspot.com

It can get hot, but that is of course relative to what you are used to. When we do tours we schedule them for the cooler parts of the day. If it is cloudy or raining the temperature will be really bearable. Most importantly the evenings are pleasant. And we havcen't lost a single guest to heat stroke. If you are really sensitive about the temperature, I suggest only three days at AW; most visitors get "templed out" in that period of time. You'll be walking up and down a lot of steps.

I've been there myself and found it hot at the day time, but very comfortable in the evening. It is after all a learning tour about how Cambodians live. If you're into gracious living there are many 4-5 star hotel.

All good travel involves a lot of planning and just enough whim to cast off the plans momentarily. A travel agency is to travel as Classic Comics is to the classics.

First, how hot it is depends on what month you visit. If you come from November to February blankets are supplied, no they're not electric. Rana is not for everyone, the owner has chosen not only to live among Cambodian farmers, he has chosen to live like them. No one however could call this a tour of deprivation. There is a richness of life, if not of wealth. To each his own.
