Well, i do have some info about the palace and hope it could help.
Though we call Potala Palace but nowadays it's a museum which consists of 1000 rooms and it separates to 2 palaces (Red and White)
The Red one is use for religious purposes while the White one use for secular functions.
**Note** as it locates 3700 meters above sea level, i suggest u to rest first on the first day in order to get use to the thin air before exploring the place.
Umm... i also have a tip for u but not so sure if it's correct. As my friend also planning a trip to Tibet and one of a must-go place in his plan is Potala Palace. He said that u should buy a tour package from a tour operater instead of arrange it yourself as it's not really safe to go alone in Tibet. Anyway, this's not because of the local people or any cultural difference but the location itself. As it told u before, it's 3700meter above sea level (12000 feet) Thin air can make u terribly sick!!!
Also the Chinese Govt allow only 200 tourists entering the palace so u have to start to queue up since 5-6 am. in order to get the ticket to enter the palace. So that's why i suggest buying a ticket from a tour operater is better.
