Hi,

This is an exciting one. Last Saturday, I made a sudden plan to ride all the way to Haridwar from New Delhi on my favorite Royal Enfield Bullet 350cc bike. I started at 5 in the morning. A lot of fog and mist and a chill in the air were there but certainly not enough to dampen my spirits.

It was quite a challenge to me as I have never rode the Bull outside city limits...leave alone highways. With no traffic on the roads, it was a smooth start for me. An hour passed cruising at a steady speed of 60 kmph and after that when....

I suddenly remembered that I forgot the papers of my bike. By then, I had covered quite a distance and was in no mood to turn back. I decided to face the challenge, by chance if I am asked for the papers. It was a risk though. After a 3-hour ride, I stopped by a "dhaba" ( eateries on the highways in India ) for my breakfast. by the way, Enfields have a heavy thump and is a eye-turner on any roads. Gauging my built, the owner asked me if I was a cop. I answered in negative, to which he said that I definitely look like one...and I guess, with my Enfield, I did look like one! It was a 25-minute break for me and I made sure everything was fine with my bike....clutch cables, rear brake etc.

It was 5 minutes on the road and I sensed a change in the climate. Suddenly, from a sunny weather, it was turning a little grey with some thundering! My worst fear was nearing, and I was unprepared ....without any rain cover. The first drop of rain trickled on the rear view mirror and a look at the speedometer said, I was riding at 110 kmph. i was in no mood to slow down, leave apart stopping in the rain......

It started raining heavily within a few minutes, and the only consolation came was in the form of plastic money or card. At least, I could pay through card or who would actually accept wet notes. In another 2 minutes time, I was soaked in rain and so, had to stop to remove my helmet, so that I could see what lay ahead! Only 50 kilometers were left to reach Haridwar and now, there was this sudden slowdown.

Getting drenched has its own benefits....nothing could stop me now, but I had to cruise at 30 kmph through the lovely terrains. The slight uphill climb had started and I knew I was near. At the same time, the beauty was something elusive that I would carry in my heart all my life.....alone in the winding roads....rain soaked....mesmerizing beauty......sans a camera though!! It gave me an awesome high and the experience is simply beyond words.

Rain-soaked, I continued on my way. There were groups of children on the side of the road going together; all with their multi-colored stretched out. Just when I was about to cross them, they started waiving at me. I waived back at them.....it was a lucky exchange of smiles! By and by, I was nearing the holy town of Haridwar, and by now, the rain God seemed to have exhausted him. A haze of sunshine was there, the other moment there appeared a rainbow near the hills. I stopped by the side of the road for a quick satisfying glance, and again revved up the engine make up for the time lost during the rain.

It was 1.00 pm when I reached Haridwar. I thumped through the lanes to get to hotel for a much-deserved lunch and an afternoon sleep to bulk up my energy levels for the evening stroll.

I woke up after 2 hours of sleep and found that it was quite sunny now. All I had to do was go out and catch some action near the Hari Ki Pauri, the sacred banks of the Ganges river with a dedicated temple to the goddess. It is flocked by pilgrims from all over Asia and beyond. The sight was simply mesmerizing with the 'sadhus' taking the holy dip in the Ganges, and pilgrims offering prayers to the deities, saffron clad.

Meanwhile, my bike was getting a well-deserved rest in the parking. After another 2 hours, darkness dawned and it was a different sight altogether. There were groups of people who were booking tickets for buses to Rishikesh, which is located another 30 kilometers through gentle curves of the hills from Haridwar. Thoughts surfaced up whether I could go to Rishikesh the next day, but the thought of catching up with my job scrapped the idea. There's always a next time I thought!

Well, let me tell you something about Rishikesh. It's a picturesque town, revered by the Hindus the world over for its holy status. The Ganges or the Ganga river winds through the town and divides it into three parts, and there are two hanging bridges; Laxman Jhula and the Ram Jhula which connects these parts with elan. For tourists, there are a plenty of hotels in Rishikesh. I have been there twice, but the will to go by a Royal Enfield towers above all my wishes.

Back to Haridwar, I had my dinner at around 10 and then slept like a log blissfully! Got up at around 7 a.m. and had my breakfast, after which I strolled through the markets and narrow lanes. I bought some souvenirs for my family members, and then headed back to the hotel. Finally, I checked out at 10 a.m. to start my journey back to Delhi.

Three gentle crankings and my bike was thumping loud, announcing the journey in a royal tone. I started off and thankfully, it was a sunny day!

I was in the last leg of my journey, and the feeling was equally good....same as when I had left for Haridwar. The odds were aplenty, from forgetting my papers, my camera, and then getting rain-soaked. However, I lived through it to tell that being spirited makes you break all odds.

I reached home in Delhi at around 5.00 in the evening. A hot cup of tea....what else could I ask for?

The End.
