King Shah Jahan built it in 1600s to reflect the sorrow of losing his beloved queen. He wanted to perpetuate her memory. It took 22 years and 22,000 people to complete the Taj Mahal.

It costs today about $100 million. Anyway, it cost King Jahan dearly. Because it acutely drained the treasury, Jahan was dethroned and imprisoned for the last nine years of his life. From his prison quarters, he could poignantly see the wonder where his love lay and where he himself would eventually be.

We were in Agra for a day visit last year, around October. We rented a car from New Delhi and went a sightseeing tour to Agra. we started at 6.30 in the morning and came back by 9.00 p.m. There are quite a few other historical monuments in Agra and Delhi, but the Taj Mahal easily outshines all others combined. Taj is truly beautiful and definitely needs to be seen at least once. If you haven't seen the Taj, you surely have missed a lot!bof

I myself didn't drive to Agra from Ned Delhi, but I can say the highways are in pretty good condition. However, once you get into the city, traffic is a bit chaotic and better left to local drivers. Though you can surely go ahead and try your hand, but be alert....not to bump anybody's .....

How to reach Taj Mahal? There are several option for you as below :

By Airwink_smile
This is the fastest way. Angra has its own airport that is around 7 km from city center.

By Roadteeth_smile
There are bus services from Agra to many important cities.

Local Transportationlol
You can easily get taxi,auto-rickshaw and cycle rickshaw in the city.

For the adventurous kindshocked, there are bicycle that can be hired or you can find horse-driven, rickshaws and other pollution-free vehicles there.eieiei

Been to the Taj some months ago. Regarding the color, it had faded a a bit, but now I guess the shine and the old charm are both back after a thorough renovation. I have seen 30-year old pics of the Taj, and they surely are a lot whiter, but I feel pollution has taken its toll on all mojor historical monuments in the world.

Till the time The Taj stands tall, let's not worry about the color!

The security is very tight at the Taj,so you have to leave behide your cellphone coz you are not allowed to take it in and no tripods are allowed in too.

As i know Taj Mahal is closed on every friday , so don't visit Agra on Friday. wink_smile
