We went to Kerala, India, and we were thrilled by the amazing backwaters. They are actually connected with the ocean and provide a fantastic ambiance. We also rented a houseboat and had our lunch onboard. They say the cuisine is traditional South Indian, but whatever they were, tasty indeed! One word of caution, carry an umbrella if you happen to go during the rainy season. It keeps on raining!
Being a biker, the next time I visit India, I would hire or purchase a Royal Enfield, and ride across north to south.

Hey, seems interesting! I actually went to the north-eastern states in India and so, missed on the southern states. I went to Sikkim and Assam in India. I went to as far as the Chinese border on the Sikkim side. It's all snow and freezing cold. However, the next time I visit India, I'll try to see the backwaters myself. I actually go to India for spiritual reasons, and at the end, I go touring for 7 gays at a stretch. I have also searched in google for Kerala backwaters and came across some cool pics. Will try the next time.

I too have been to the Backwaters in kerala. the only difference was, however, I stayed at my friend's place so FREE!!
Backwaters are really amazing and there are many resort styled hotels which offer decent accommodations, which I feel are more directed towards international travelers. Doesn't matter much because there are many hotels which are quite close to the backwaters, but one third the price. During the Onam festival, tourists can watch the boat race ( sorry..forgot the name ) which takes place every year. Didn't see much of the attractions there...we were idling all day long

The backwaters are back again with fresh waters from the rainfall. Though many would not want to wet their shoes in the rain, but for me...this is the time for a romantic getaway.
Houseboats are easily available now a days, and it's one of the best ways to enjoy the idyllic setting of the backwaters and loads of South Indian delicacies. A yummy vacation for me ahead!!
