"Hinamatsuri (Doll's Festival)" is held on March 3rd. This is a day to pray for young girl's growth and happiness. It is also called "Momo no sekku (Peach Festival)" because of the peach blossom season on the old lunar calendar.

Most families with girls display "hina-ningyo" (special dolls for Hinamatsuri) and dedicate peach blossoms to them. They are usually arranged on a five or seven-tiered stand covered with a red carpet. At the top are the Emperor and Empress. The next step contains three court ladies (sannin-kanjo), followed by five musicians (gonin-bayashi), two ministers (udaijin and sadaijin), and three servants ending the bottom row in a five-tiered display. There are also small pieces of furniture, small meal dishes, and other things.

U may follow the link below for more informations. Hope this could help! regular_smile

So this is for young girls only?

What about boys?

Do Japanese celebrate for young boys on the same date?

This is for girls only but there's also boy's day call "Tango no Sekku"(The Boy's Festival) is held on May 5.

It is held to express hope that each boy in the family will grow up healthy and strong.

Similar to the Girl's Day, warrior figures will be set up in the house during this festival, iris leaves are placed under the eaves to protect from evil, and huge fish-like streamers are fastened to poles. (this calls 'koinobori').

Special rice cakes wrapped in oak leaves will be serve on this day.

Just saw on TV the other night .

If you do not put the paper doll away in proper time , it is beleived that the girl will be single for the rest of her life.

I think it is not a must these days but , as you know , Japanese people tend to preserve old customs and belief so I think this custom will be practiced and on for most , but not all , Japanese.

Well... yes, chuchu it's true!

Actually, they will set out the displays of dolls aroung the middle of Febuary and last long should not be over 3rd of March to ensure a young girl's happiness in her family life.

More about his day:

Sometimes they call it 'Momo no sekku' = 'Festival of the peach' cuz mostly they'll place pink peach blossoms amoung the dolls on display.

Usually, the dolls will be arranged on the platforms consisting of between 5 and 7 tiers covered with red felt. Anyway, sometimes single-tire displays can be seen quite common esp. in an apartment.
