I have just heard that the Otaru is one of the most romantic cities in Hokkaido. Is it right? I've not heard about this town before and wonder how to go there. Can anyone tell me about this, pls?
As well, please advise the must-do thing and the must-go places. o_o

Thank you in advance!

Otaru is a beautiful little city. It has a small canal area running through the center of the town with old brick wharehouses and some older stone buildings. It is mostly famous in Japan for having a unique atmosphere - sort of a mix of Japanese and Russian architecture and culture.

The seafood there is amazing, and there are some local microbreweries which have very good beer. There is also a lot of good souvenir shopping, with unique items such as glass-blown cups and traditional Japanese glass fishing floats.

Otaru is about an hour's train ride from Sapporo, the capital of Hokkaido. I used to work in Otaru once a week when I lived in Sapporo, and I always enjoyed the view from the train as it passes along the Japan Sea coast. There are also some good surf spots you can see from the train like Zenibako Beach!
