Hello everyone I just joined this forum as I am planning to undertake volunteer work in central Khatmandu next year from September 2009 until January 2010.
But before I go I need to find out some information and was hoping to seek the advice of those in this community.

Is pollution a real problem in Khatmandu? any tips for example wear a mask or cover up.

What is the cost of living like (cheap/expensive or varies)

Any idea what the weather likely to be at the time I plan to go (Sept - Jan)

Is English spoken or mainly Nepalese

Any advice would be appreciated as I have been researching books but I prefer the advice of those who have experienced the country.

Thank you and I hope to hear from you soon.

Kind regards

As far as I know, I've never been to Kathmandu, most of people in Kathmandu speak Nepali and dialect.(Maithili, Nepal Bhasa, Bhojpuri, Tharu, Gurung, Tamang, Magar, Awadhi, Sherpa, Kiranti and another 100 different indigenous languages.)

Nepali is an Indo-Aryan language spoken in Nepal, Bhutan, and some parts of India and Myanmar (Burma).

Another issue is Air pollution; it is a problem in Kathmandu which human health is severely affected. The pollution in Kathmandu is mainly due to vehicular emission, poor quality rood, fuel etc.
You can check the information from
http://www.most.gov.np/pollution/pollution.php

There are some studies state that the linkages between meteorological processes and air pollution in the lower atmosphere of the Kathmandu Valley. The physical setting of Kathmandu also influences air pollution concentrations.
