Hi,

We are two families planning to travel around Vietnam and Cambodia with our combined 5 children in January!

We are hoping to not make too many hotel bookings before we leave as we would prefer to travel with a laptop and see how we feel each day, then make decisions with regards to accomadation.

Our question is: Is it cheaper or more expensive to book hotels months ahead in Australia or can bargains still be had if we book online on the day, or a day or two earlier? We will definitely book online as we don't want to arrive in a town and have to walk around looking for a room (or 4!) but want to make sure we will not be paying double price, booking so close to the time of stay.

Would greatly appreciate any info or similar stories.

Many Thanks.

Well, I think I can only leave a comment on advance reservation. There are also advantages and disadvantages that you might take a risk, if you already searched for hotels' information and make a decision already on which hotel it might be easier.

If you reserve it advance, it gives you chances to get the confirmation earlier and you can arrange your travel plan however the price might not be so cheap if there is no promotion or discount nights. In the other hand, if you don't book in advance, the hotel might be providing only walk-in or rack rate which more much more expensive or in some cities; a few hotels might want to sell their room so cheap in order to get last-minute customers. Therefore it really depends on you how or in which way you would love to arrange your trip.

Good luck then wink_smile

My partner and I and another couple booked our accommodation on-line before leaving Australia and the other couple travelling with us only booked a couple.

They arrived with us at the hotels we had booked and checked pricing/availability. Twice they got better deals, twice had to find other hotels which they got close by but did a bit of leg work in quite hot conditions.

In Phuket, where they had booked for two nights, the extra night was going to cost them double what we had all purchased on-line (rack rate).

My question would be... "How old are the kids?" and "Could making decisions on accommodation when everyone may be hot/bothered/tired/sweaty/irritable cause difficulties?"

Happy to recommend some hotels if you like... Cheers.
