It roughly takes 4 days to reach Machu Picchu. The best preparation is to choose a tour operator which meets your budget and interests.

You have 2 options to do the Inca Trail the 2 day trip and the 4 day trip i recommend the 4 day trip because you get to see beautiful landscapes the animals, the plants.
The 2 day trip is shorter is good choice if u don't have the time but i'd prefer the 4 day trip.
Remember always to book in advance for all the tickets the entrance, the train ticket (PeruRail) sometimes the is no availability specially in July an August.
Here is more info about the incatrail

I made the Inca trail in 3 days with a bunch of friends, but that was before they started to limit access to it(it was back in the day when i was younger teeth_smile).
Now you NEED a tour operator to book you in o_o and going on your own isn't a good idea(you will need to wait if you don't plan ahead coz a max of 500 people are allowed each day in the trail).

There is also another 7 days longer route for the Inca trail which has far less tourists, if you have the time get it.
