Hi,

Could anyone tell me where can I get vegan food in Caracas. I wish to go there soon, but everything depends on whether I would be able to get vegan ( pure vegetarian along with the exclusion of milk products). Anyone who has some idea about restaurants/ hotels...please help me.. SOS

Regards,

Daniel

-Sabas Nieves at Distrito Federal/Metro: Plaza Venezuela. The menu is changed daily featuring rotating ethnic cuisines. You can find vegetarian pan de jamón, baked whole wheat emapandas, and more. The restaurant is closed every Sunday. (Tel. 212-7636712)

-Xochilt which is located at near fire station and liceo Leopoldo Aguerrevere. The restaurant is Vegan-friendly, Venezuela style. The lunch menu is fixed but you can find snackes, fresh young coconuts, and other beverages in the other times. (Tel. 212-6931624)

I would suggest you visit www.happycow.com every time you travel.

There is hardly any "fake meat" but you find lots of beans, pulses, vegetables and fruits... Salads tend to be OK but make sure you explain the waiter you are strict vegetarian = vegan - there's hardly any in Venezuela (I'm one of them but now live in Europe)

There is a new shop called BioOrganica near Altamira tube station next to Centro San Ignacio shopping centre, so at least you can find soya milk. Next to "Don Perro" pet shop if you need to ask someone for directions!

I also remember in "Plaza's" supermarket I saw individual soya shakes, but very expensive for the "locals" - Be prepared to pay a premium price for it but it's worth it :o)

Beware they put lactic solids in Margarine, there is a liquid one that apparently doesn't have any and is found in this BioOrganica shop...

If you take the cable car to Avila Mountain and go to a rural village called Galipan you might find a restaurant where I ate vegan venezuelan menu and apparently the owner is vegetarian, can't remember the name but it's such a small villa, next to a pizzeria place... it's potato burger, black bean, plantain frittes and lovely salad!!!

Beware that in black bean they put lots of time bacon and it's hardly noticeable and they tried to fool me in 2 different trips. I suggest if you eat arepa (venezuelan corn flour bread) you just eat it with avocado and/or fried plantain. Only add black beans if you trust the source.

Ah, Venezuelan Malt seems to be vegan to me and it's quite fulfilling. When doing road trips I relied on SODA Crackers (local brand) and kids compot... don't expect to find vegan options out of Caracas.

There is also lot of food contamination as they fried everything in the same oil sometimes so watch out...

If you need any help let me know!

I am a pure vegetarian, though not a vegan, I found out that loading your bags with some veg stuff really helps. So, whenever, you come across any vegan restaurant, get something extra so that when you feel hungry, you can simply reach out to your bags. I feel soyabeans are the best companion when you really need to fill your belly. Some hot water and salt are all that you would need.... ohh....some ready to eat noodles can also be helpful.
